Most English-language books and film documentaries consider kamikazes to include Japanese pilots who conducted suicidal ramming attacks on American aircraft.
Lamont-Brown also uses “kamikaze” to refer to other ramming attacks made during the war by naval pilots. Even after hitting a B, a pilot sometimes had a chance to parachute from his plane or even to land his damaged plane. Although this specialized book presents many fascinating stories and photos, it does not provide enough background information on the entire scope of the B attacks and the Japanese military’s defense of the home islands.

Instead, only those pilots in designated special attack units are officially recognized. As a final resort, units formed specialist ramming flights, and these proved highly successful up until the arrival of the USAAF escort fighters in April Huntsrs Japanese also had an early warning Radar haaf which kept them well informed.
