This is a true “locked room” murder in every sense of the word, and while I figured out the “who” of the crime pretty early on, I never did figure out the “how” until the final reveal. Not as good as her Regency books but quite enjoyable. Published September 7th by Arrow first published I enjoyed this book, but it was hard going the first half-once I got past the interminable family squabbling, the sardonic grinning Stephen, and the quelling looks from butler Sturry is was very good.

Refresh and try again. I always love Heyer’s characters. The Best Books of In a word, nostalgic; two words, classic mystery; three words, jolly good fun. It’s very hard to be sympathetic or find a character to root for, but I envilus her skewering of upper-class behavior and stereotypes typical of a Golden Age mystery; I enviouus to admit I like her Regencies better, but I always enjoy her mysteries.

Fans of Carr John Dickson, not Phillippa will have little difficulty in piecing together the facts, and the main suspect is just a little bit too Dickensian to be true; but there’s still lots of fun to be had from the ongoing family battles, interspersed with waspish comments from the author. The method of the kill was not hinted in a way that I thought we were supposed to be able to figure out as we read it, so that was not worth puzzling over. Compared to Heyer’s own standards of witticisms which casa aplenty and fresh in her other book “cotillion”, this book is weak even in that area.
