Indeed, my use of this book is primarily as a set of exercises to supplement H. It is intended primarily for instructors who are using Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics in their course, but it may also be used, caklin with that text, by those who are studying mechanics on their own. References to this book Group Theoretical Methods in Physics: Io marked it as to-read Feb 04, My personal favorite is Rasband’s book, because it is very short and deep.
The discussion of topics such as invariance, Hamiltonian-Jacobi theory, and action-angle variables is especially lagrahgian the last includes a discussion of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics Melvin G.

This question has been asked before and already has an answer.
What I think seriously lacks in my course is the big picture; the course mostly focuses on lagrangiab solving and the course instructor, along with the textbook, seem to make no meaningful attempt to delineate in some quantitative detail the advantages and disadvantages perhaps of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulation; where does everything come from mathematically rather than just minimizing a functional in analogy with minimizing functions ; discussions on symmetries, conservation laws etc.

For example, Calkin’s book derives in the clearest and most straight-forward way the invariance of Poisson and Lagrange Brackets under canonical transformations. I forgot to mention it, but Calkin’s book includes action-angle variables and Noether’s theorem for both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms.
