Newer Post Older Post Home. Interesting but pretty obvious actually – very broad overview. I found this truly fascinating how we human computers break down the dress and body language to almost rate and be able to read people. The best chapters are about how clothes communicate gender and sexual messages.

I was thinking about last years Fair Isle post, and almost posted a short story that was inspired by a visit I made to the island over 30 years ago when I was researching my thesis. It was interesting in spots, but it’s obviously, since it was written xlison outdated. Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer – no Kindle device required. Clothing as a Sign System. I did once read a piece by Lurie about how her own clothes choices had changed as she grew older – will see if I can find a link.

Wonderful post – thanks, Catherine! Lurie’s is lurid only one you need bother with. Some information gets repeated between the chapters, but it’s usually worth repeating.

After finishing college, Lurie worked as an editorial assistant for Oxford University Press in New York, wanting to make a living luriw a writer. Today, we may be regressing from the relative liberation of the ss pantsuit to a more restricted femininity of straight skirts and high heels. It doesn’t feature much about my core period – 12th century, it’s focus is elsewhere, but I recently featured it on my research book feature on my Facebook page!

The Language of Clothes
I’ve long thought of clothing as a form of social signalling, and this book goes through a detailed history of how that has worked over the years. Too many other comments on fashion’s relation to place, time, status, and opinion are similarly dubious or banal on the topic of color, for example, we learn that white symbolizes purity, innocence, and status; black, gloom, guilt, sophistication.
A bit out of date, but for the historical and anthropological perspective, quite entertaining! Woman were not spared during this time as well. Her father was a Latvian-born teacher, scholar and socialist who founded the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. If I hadn’t read this for a book club, I don’t think Cpothes would have picked it up.
