She’ll just bide her time and wait for the perfect chance to escape the ship. Or will true love be lost at sea? So he spends the first half of the book alternating between scaring her into puddle of quivering goo, or seducing her, which has more or less the same result. The authors describe each character and setting in such loving detail that the book could almost be a screenplay. The minute Devon finds out that Merry may have been in bed with Granville, he starts calling her a whore and almost wndflower her.

Of course, windflowet Devon takes Merry as his prisoner, her life is in his hands. But ultimately, I did not love this book despite my best intentions to do so.
Married more than forty years, Tom and Sharon published ten historical and contemporary romance novels from tomany of which have come to be regarded as classics in the genre.
And if she’d been spirited and spunky, she’d probably have ended up dead much sooner. This book has it, for sure.
It features Devon’s half brother Rand Morgan, easily the best secondary romance character ever written. The story kept turning in directions that I didn’t expect, and the secondary characters were all so interesting that I wanted all of them to have their own stories so I could read them immediately. But we won’t have to hunt for copies anymore: Bedeviled by his own demons, Devon is torn between his desire for Merry and his obsession with revenge.

This book is so much better than The Flame and the Flower, though, from prose style to plotting to characterization.
Pay the premium for a good used copy and put it on your keeper shelf. But some sentences were too obscure and awkward for my taste.
